A stunning seaside Buddhist temple perched on the rocky coastline of northeastern Busan. Unlike most Korean temples hidden in the mountains, this one offers breathtaking ocean panoramas with crashing waves below.

Haedong Yonggungsa was founded in 1376 by the monk Naong during the Goryeo Dynasty, destroyed during the Japanese invasions of 1592, and rebuilt in the 1930s. Unlike most Korean temples hidden in mountains, this one is built on coastal cliffs — a rare setting that lives up to its name, 'Dragon Palace Temple of the Eastern Sea.'
From the entrance, descend 108 steps (symbolizing the 108 afflictions in Buddhism) to reach the main hall perched on the cliff. The ocean panorama on the way down is already stunning. The Haesu Gwaneum Buddha statue, 12 Zodiac Animal statues, and the wishing stone bridge offer a continuous series of photo opportunities.
It's famous as a New Year's sunrise spot — tens of thousands gather on January 1st. It opens at 5am daily, so early morning visits reward you with a peaceful, crowd-free temple experience. About 30 minutes by bus from Haeundae.
