Cape Muroto is a dramatic headland at the southeastern tip of Shikoku in Kochi Prefecture, forming the centrepiece of the Muroto UNESCO Global Geopark designated in 2011. The coastline exposes ancient submarine rock formations thrust upward by one of the world's fastest tectonic uplift rates, creating a raw, elemental landscape of folded turbidites and wave-sculpted boulders. The cape also holds deep spiritual significance as the place where the Buddhist monk Kukai is said to have attained enlightenment, with the Mikurodo Cave marking the site of his training.
- From Nahari Station on the Tosa Kuroshio Railway, take the Kochi Tobu bus to Muroto Global Geopark Center (approx. 1 hour). A rental car is strongly recommended.
- Start your visit at the Muroto Global Geopark Center to pick up maps and get tips from staff before exploring the coastline.
- The Mikurodo Cave — where Kukai trained — is carved by wave action and offers a striking natural frame of sea and sky from within; don't miss it.
- Combine with stops along the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage route for a deeper cultural and spiritual experience.
