Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine in Fukuoka Prefecture enshrines Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of learning. The grounds feature the legendary flying plum tree (tobiume), said to have flown from Kyoto following its master. Students flock here year-round to pray for exam success.

  • Take the Nishitetsu train from Fukuoka Tenjin Station (approx. 30 min).
  • Try umegae-mochi (plum rice cakes) from the stalls along the approach road.

  • Combine with a visit to the nearby Kyushu National Museum.
