Design Festa Gallery is an independent art space in Harajuku that has operated since 1998 on the principle that anyone — regardless of age, nationality, or medium — should have a platform to exhibit and sell their work, without any commission taken. Two buildings ('East' and 'West') connected by corridors and an inner courtyard house 71 exhibition spaces, with colourful murals covering the exterior walls. Exhibitions rotate constantly, meaning every visit offers a completely different experience.

Tips
  • About 9 minutes on foot from JR Harajuku Station, or 5 minutes from Tokyo Metro Meiji-Jingumae Station.
  • Admission is free. Artists sell their work directly, so if something catches your eye, you can often buy it on the spot.
  • Open daily 11:00–20:00. Since exhibitions change constantly, repeat visits always reveal something new.
  • The Sakura-Tei restaurant inside the gallery has hand-painted mural walls and lets you grill your own okonomiyaki at the table — a fun art-meets-food experience.
