Anbandegi

Elevation 1,100 meters. The name Anbandegi comes from Gangneung dialect — anban is the wooden board for pounding rice cakes, degi means flat ground. After the Korean War, displaced farmers climbed up here and carved cabbage fields along the ridgeline. In summer, waves of green cabbage cover the slopes and clouds drift below your feet. Each gust of wind flips the leaves, flashing green to white. Night is this village's real hour. With no artificial light nearby, the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye. A small cafe in the center has a rooftop with beanbags — drinks run 4,500 to 6,000 won. Lie back on a beanbag and look up, and the stars feel close enough to pour down. A car is required; there is no public transport. Even in summer it is cool — bring a long-sleeved layer.
