Gangneung Daedohobu Government Office

Built in the 19th year of Goryeo King Taejo's reign, this government complex once administered the entire Yeongdong region through the Joseon dynasty. The Imyeonggwan Sammun — the oldest surviving guest-hall gate in Korea — is designated National Treasure No. 51. Wind passes between the thick timber columns much as it must have centuries ago. Most structures were demolished during the Japanese occupation; only recently have portions been restored. The spacious courtyard, left largely open, feels tranquil rather than empty. Standing in the center of downtown Gangneung, it is a quiet place that carries real weight — a firsthand look at how Joseon governance was organized on the eastern seaboard.
