Heo Gyun Heo Nanseolheon Memorial Park

Heo Gyun wrote Hong Gildong, Korea's most famous novel. Heo Nanseolheon was the greatest female poet of the Joseon dynasty. The siblings were born in the same house. Set among pine trees in Chodang-dong, this memorial park has no grand spectacle — a few literary monuments, the old homesite, and pines swaying in the wind. That is all. But the simplicity sharpens their story. Nanseolheon died at twenty-seven; her poetry was recognized in China and Japan before Korea. Gyun was executed for his revolutionary ideas. Walk slowly, read the plaques, and you begin to feel how dangerous it was to outpace your era in Joseon. Admission is free. Combine it with the nearby Chodang sundubu village and an hour is plenty.
