Myeongju was Gangneung's name during the Silla kingdom. Walk the narrow alleys and you will find a 1958 church repurposed as a performance hall, roastery cafes slotted into aging storefronts, and the word sinami — Gangneung dialect for 'slowly' — printed on walls and signs. One word captures the whole neighborhood's tempo. Myeongju Sarangchae is a community space shared by locals and visitors. Weekend flea markets pop up in the courtyard, and traditional craft workshops let you try your hand at making something by hand. It feels less like a tourist district and more like a neighborhood that simply left the door open.
