Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima Island in Hiroshima Prefecture is a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its floating torii gate. At high tide, the shrine buildings appear to float on the sea; at low tide, visitors can walk out to the iconic vermillion gate.
- Check tide schedules — at 250cm+ the torii appears to float on the water.
- About 1 hour from Hiroshima Station via JR train and ferry.
- Watch out for deer — they will approach and grab food.
- Admission is 300 yen; the shrine is especially beautiful at sunset when lit up.
