Kotoku-in is a Buddhist temple in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, celebrated for its monumental outdoor bronze Buddha (Amida Nyorai), cast in 1252, standing 13.35 meters tall and weighing approximately 121 tonnes. The wooden hall that once sheltered the statue was swept away by a tsunami in 1498, leaving the Great Buddha seated openly under the sky ever since — an iconic image of Kamakura. Visitors can enter the hollow interior of the statue for an additional ¥50.

Tips
- Take the Enoden (Enoshima Electric Railway) from Kamakura Station to Hase Station, then walk 7–10 minutes to the temple.
- Admission: ¥300 for adults, ¥150 for children (ages 6–12); entering the Buddha's interior costs an additional ¥50.
- Opening hours: 8:00 AM–5:30 PM (April–September) and 8:00 AM–5:00 PM (October–March).
- Arrive early morning to avoid crowds — 30 to 60 minutes is enough to see everything comfortably.
