Maizuru Park is a historic urban park built around the ruins of Fukuoka Castle, famous for approximately 1,000 cherry trees that transform the grounds each spring. The castle was constructed by daimyo Kuroda Nagamasa in the early Edo period, and several turrets and gates still survive on the grounds. Archaeological excavations within the park also uncovered the Korokan, an ancient guesthouse used to receive foreign envoys during the Heian period.
