Motonosumi Inari Shrine is a coastal Shinto shrine in Nagato City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, established in 1955 following a divine decree said to have come from a white fox spirit. A tunnel of 123 vermilion torii gates stretches 100 meters along the cliff edge above the Sea of Japan, creating a dramatic contrast of red, green, and blue. A natural blowhole called Ryugu no Shiofuki shoots seawater up to 30 meters into the air when waves crash against the cliff face.
- Public transport is very limited — renting a car is strongly recommended. It is about 30 minutes by car from Nagatoyumoto Onsen.
- Tossing a coin into the offering box at the very top of the first torii gate is a must-try experience.
- The Ryugu no Shiofuki blowhole is most spectacular when waves are strong, especially in autumn and winter.
- Visit early in the morning or on weekdays to have the torii tunnel to yourself for photos.
