Mount Takao is a 599-meter peak in Hachioji, Tokyo, recognized by Michelin with three stars in 2007 and attracting over 3 million visitors annually — making it the world's most visited mountain. The mountain is home to more than 1,200 species of plants and animals, and features the historic Yakuo-in Temple along the main trail. Six official hiking routes of varying difficulty are available, with a cable car and chairlift providing easier access to the upper slopes.
- Take the Keio Limited Express from Shinjuku to Takaosanguchi Station in about 50 minutes for 430 yen one way.
- Trail 1 is the most popular and can be partially done by cable car or chairlift — choose based on your fitness level.
- Cherry blossoms peak in early April; autumn foliage is best around mid-November.
- Weekends get very crowded — an early weekday morning visit is ideal.
