Munakata Taisha is a complex of three ancient Shinto shrines in Munakata City, Fukuoka Prefecture, dedicated to three sister goddesses believed to protect travelers at sea. The shrines and associated sites were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017 under 'Sacred Island of Okinoshima and Associated Sites in the Munakata Region.' The remote island of Okinoshima, where over 80,000 ritual artifacts from the 4th to 9th centuries were preserved almost untouched, is off-limits to the public, but some treasures can be viewed at the Shinpokan Museum within the shrine complex.
- From JR Togo Station, take a bus for about 10 minutes, or drive about 10 minutes from the Munakata IC.
- Hetsu-gu on the mainland and Nakatsu-gu on Oshima are open to visitors; Okitsu-gu on Okinoshima is strictly off-limits.
- Do not miss the Shinpokan Museum within the shrine, which displays nationally treasured artifacts from Okinoshima.
- Oshima (Nakatsu-gu) is reachable by ferry from Munakata Port in approximately 70 minutes.
