Nagoya Castle was built in 1612 by Tokugawa Ieyasu and is one of Japan's most iconic Edo-period fortresses, topped by a famous pair of golden shachihoko — mythical tiger-headed sea creatures weighing 88 kilograms of pure gold each. Though the main keep was destroyed in World War II and rebuilt in 1959, the magnificently decorated Honmaru Palace was faithfully restored and reopened in 2018 after years of painstaking reconstruction. The surrounding Meijo Park blooms with seasonal flowers, and daily samurai and ninja performances add to the experience.
- Take a bus from Nagoya Station (about 20 minutes) or walk 5 minutes from Nagoya-jo Station on the Meijo Line.
- Adult admission is 500 yen; children in junior high and below enter free. The fee covers both the main keep and Honmaru Palace.
- The main keep may have restricted access due to earthquake retrofitting works — check the official site before visiting.
- Samurai and ninja performances take place daily in the castle grounds; check the timetable on arrival.
