The National Film Archive of Japan (NFAJ) in Kyobashi, Tokyo is the country's only public institution dedicated entirely to cinema, holding approximately 40,000 films in its collection. Established independently in 2018, the institution operates two screening theaters — including the Nagase Memorial Theatre OZU — and a 7th-floor gallery hosting permanent and special exhibitions on film history. Its collection includes Japan's oldest surviving film, Momijigari (1899), and masterworks such as Ozu Yasujiro's Tokyo Story.
