Nezu Shrine in Bunkyo, Tokyo has more than 1,900 years of history and is celebrated for its hillside garden of approximately 3,000 azalea plants spanning 100 species across 6,600 square meters. Each April, the Bunkyo Azalea Festival (Tsutsuji Matsuri) draws crowds to see the hillside ablaze with pink, red, white, and purple blooms, framed by a winding tunnel of vermilion torii gates. Entry to the main shrine is free; the azalea garden charges 500 to 1,000 yen depending on the stage of bloom.

- Take the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line to Nezu Station or the Namboku Line to Todaimae Station — both are a 5 to 7-minute walk.

- Weekends are extremely crowded — a weekday visit is strongly recommended.
- Early morning offers the best light and fewest crowds for photographing the torii tunnel.
