Niyodo River, Kochi, Japan
The Niyodo River flows 124 kilometers through Kochi Prefecture and has been selected as Japan's purest river by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism eight times over the past decade. Its defining feature is the phenomenon known as 'Niyodo Blue,' a mesmerizing color that shifts from emerald green to cobalt blue depending on water depth, riverbed stones, sunlight angle, and surrounding foliage. Popular spots include the transparent viewing platform at Nikobuchi (Kaiyukan) and riverside hiking trails, with the blue hue most vivid on clear days in autumn and winter.
- Public transport is very limited — renting a car is strongly recommended. It is about 1 hour by car from Kochi City.
- The Niyodo Blue color is most vivid on sunny mornings when sunlight hits the riverbed directly.
- The road to Nikobuchi gorge is narrow and winding — drive carefully.
