Location
Shimasakurai, Itoshima, Fukuoka 819-1304, Japan
Located on the Itoshima coast west of Fukuoka, Sakurai Futamigaura is home to two sea rocks (Meoto Iwa — wedded rocks) standing about 11 meters tall and joined by a 30-meter sacred rope weighing one ton. The site, one of Japan's Top 100 Sunsets, represents the mythological deities Izanagi and Izanami.
- Take a bus from JR Chikuzen-Maebaru Station or drive about 30 minutes from central Fukuoka.
- Visit in May to witness the annual sacred rope-replacement ceremony.
- Time your arrival for sunset — or stay for the 'blue hour' just after sundown for the most dramatic sky.
- Several trendy beachside cafes and restaurants are clustered nearby for a relaxed visit.
