Tochoji Temple in Hakata's Gion district, founded in 806 by the monk Kobo Daishi, is Kyushu's oldest Shingon Buddhist temple. It houses Japan's largest wooden seated Buddha at 10.8 meters, a 25.9-meter five-story pagoda completed in 2011, and a Heian-period Thousand-Armed Kannon designated an Important Cultural Property.

Tips
- About a 5-minute walk from Gion Station (Subway Kuko Line); also 10 minutes on foot from Hakata Station.
- Main hall entry is free, but the Hell and Paradise passageway inside the Great Buddha Hall charges a small fee.
- Photography of the Buddha is strictly prohibited. The Rokkakudo Hall is open to the public only on the 28th of each month.
- Visit in autumn during the Hakata Old Town Light-up Walk festival to see the main hall and pagoda beautifully illuminated.
