Tsuruga Castle in Aizuwakamatsu, Fukushima Prefecture, is one of Tohoku's most iconic castles, distinguished by its rare red-tiled keep. Founded in 1384, it survived fierce Sengoku-era battles and now houses a museum inside the reconstructed tower. The fifth-floor observation deck offers panoramic views of Mt. Bandai and Mt. Iimoriyama, and over 1,000 cherry trees make it a nationally renowned blossom spot in spring.

Tips
  • Open 8:30–17:00, last entry 16:30. Admission is ¥410 for the keep alone or ¥520 combined with Rinkaku Teahouse. Take the Aizu Loop Bus from Aizuwakamatsu Station (approx. 20 min) to Tsurugajo Kitaguchi stop. Don't skip Rinkaku Teahouse — matcha and wagashi on the tatami overlooking the garden costs an extra ¥600 and is well worth it. Try local Aizu soba and sake nearby.
