Yasaka Shrine, also known as Gion Shrine, is a guardian shrine of the Gion district with over 1,350 years of history, situated at the eastern end of Shijo-dori. It is the center of the Gion Matsuri, one of Japan's three greatest festivals, held every July. Open 24 hours with free admission, the shrine is equally beautiful at dawn, dusk, and after dark when hundreds of lanterns illuminate the main hall.

Tips
  • 5–10 min walk from Keihan Gion-Shijo Station or Hankyu Kyoto-Kawaramachi Station. The grounds are free and open 24 hours — visit early morning or at night to enjoy the atmosphere without crowds. The Beauty Shrine within the grounds sells omamori for beauty and love, and is especially popular with young women. Adjacent Maruyama Park is Kyoto's most famous cherry blossom spot in early April.
