Yasukuni Shrine was founded by Emperor Meiji in 1869 and enshrines over 2.46 million people who died in Japan's wars since the Boshin War. The adjacent Yushukan museum presents Japan's wartime history with extensive English-language exhibits. The shrine grounds are also one of Tokyo's top cherry blossom spots, and the Mitama Matsuri lantern festival in mid-July is a major event.

- 10 min walk from Kudanshita Station (Tokyo Metro Hanzomon, Tozai, or Shinjuku lines). Shrine grounds open sunrise to sunset, free admission. Yushukan Museum open 9:00–16:30, admission ¥800 — English-language exhibits are comprehensive. Mindful, respectful behavior is important, as the shrine holds significant historical and political sensitivity for many visitors.
