UNESCO World Heritage fortress built in 1796, wrapping 5.7km around Suwon's old city center. Walk the full wall in 2-3 hours, passing through four main gates, guard towers, and archery ranges. Paldalmun Gate area doubles as a traditional market district. Entry 1,000 won. 30 minutes from Seoul by subway.

Hwaseong Haenggung is a temporary palace where King Jeongjo stayed during visits to his father Crown Prince Sado's tomb, located inside the UNESCO-listed Suwon Hwaseong Fortress. It is the largest haenggung (temporary palace) from the Joseon Dynasty, with 576 rooms restored to their original form. Daily martial arts performances and royal guard ceremonies are held in the courtyard.

Banghwasuryujeong is the northeast corner pavilion of Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, its name meaning 'visiting flowers and following willows.' Perched on a hill above Yongyeon Pond, it offers the most scenic view along the fortress walls and is designated as Korean Treasure No. 1709. Its unique architectural layout combined with the surrounding pond creates one of the finest examples of traditional Korean pavilion design.

Hwaseomun is the west gate of Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, designated as Korean Treasure No. 403. It is the best-preserved of the four main gates, featuring a single-walled ongseong (barbican) structure. Having survived the Korean War without damage, it retains its original late Joseon Dynasty appearance.

Traditional market at the southern gate of Hwaseong Fortress. Sundae (blood sausage), tteokbokki, and seasonal fruits. Friday-Saturday night market has street food stalls.
A whole street of fried whole chicken restaurants near Hwaseong. Since the 1970s, these shops have served crispy whole fried chicken (tongdak) with pickled radish - the original Korean fried chicken.
Trendy cafe alley next to Hwaseong Haenggung Palace. A mix of hanok-renovated teahouses and modern specialty coffee shops along the old streets of Suwon. Great for a post-fortress walk coffee break.
Starfield Suwon's open library, same concept as the COEX one but newer and much less crowded. Two-story bookshelves in the middle of a shopping mall. Opened 2024, still relatively unknown to tourists.
