UNESCO World Heritage fortress built in 1796, wrapping 5.7km around Suwon's old city center. Walk the full wall in 2-3 hours, passing through four main gates, guard towers, and archery ranges. Paldalmun Gate area doubles as a traditional market district. Entry 1,000 won. 30 minutes from Seoul by subway.

Guide
Hwaseong Fortress was built between 1794 and 1796 by King Jeongjo, the 22nd king of Joseon, after he relocated his father Crown Prince Sado's tomb to Suwon. More than a defensive structure, it was a symbol of filial devotion and political reform. The renowned scholar Jeong Yak-yong (Dasan) participated in the design, employing scientific devices like the geojunggi (a pulley crane) and nokro (a wheeled cart), and the innovative fusion of Eastern and Western fortification techniques was the key reason UNESCO designated it a World Heritage Site in 1997. Walking the 5.7km wall, you'll encounter 48 structures including four main gates — Janganmun (north), Paldalmun (south), Hwaseomun (west), and Changnyongmun (east) — plus guard towers, beacon mounds, and Hwahongmun, a pavilion built over seven water gates. Hwahongmun is especially stunning at night when its illuminated arches reflect on the water, making it the fortress's most photographed spot. At Yeonmudae, you can try traditional Korean archery (10 arrows for 2,000 won). Every October, the 'Royal Procession of King Jeongjo' reenactment features over 1,700 participants in historically accurate costumes marching through the fortress — one of Korea's grandest heritage events. Below Paldalmun gate, Suwon Nammun Market offers local specialties like Suwon galbi (short ribs) and Suwon fried chicken. The fortress is a 15-minute walk from Suwon Station, just 30 minutes from Seoul by subway.
