Seoul's largest and most famous fish market. Open 24 hours — the auction floor runs from midnight to dawn, but visitors come anytime for the restaurant floor. Pick live fish, crab, or lobster from vendors, then take it upstairs where restaurants prepare it as sashimi, grilled, or in stew for a small cutting fee.

Guide
Noryangjin Fish Market, established in 1927, is Seoul's largest wholesale seafood market. It operates 24 hours — auctions run from midnight to dawn, while daytime hours are for retail purchases and dining. A modern new building opened in 2016, though the old building still operates alongside it. The system is simple: pick your live seafood (flatfish, rockfish, abalone, king crab, etc.) from vendors on the first floor, then bring it to a second-floor restaurant where they'll prepare it as sashimi, spicy stew, or grilled — for a preparation fee of 5,000-10,000 KRW per person. Haggling is expected; typically you can negotiate 20-30% off the first quoted price. On a budget? The food court on basement level 1 of the new building offers fixed-price sashimi sets — fresh seafood without the haggling stress. The market is a 3-minute walk from Noryangjin Station (Lines 1 & 9).

  • Steamed king crab or snow crab
  • Maeuntang spicy fish stew (made from your leftover bones)
  • Budget-friendly sashimi set at the new building food court
Tips
  • Negotiate prices — vendors mark up for tourists. Ask neighboring stalls for comparison.
  • Cutting/cooking fee is 5,000-10,000 KRW per person at upstairs restaurants.
  • Best for lunch. For a budget option, go to the new building's food court for set-menu sashimi.
